Mrs. Folk's Weekly Message-December 6, 2019

Submitted to All Campuses on Friday, December 06, 2019

Dear Holy Cross Academy Families,

I can’t believe we are almost halfway through Advent. I think the weather is getting colder and a chance for snow next week. Everyone is in the Christmas spirit.

On Monday the Third grade made their Advent reconciliation with Father. Fourth grade students will go to reconciliation on Tuesday, December 10th and the Fifth grade students will go on Monday, December 16th.

Congratulations to our St. Michael’s second grade students who made their First Reconciliation Tuesday night. Annunciation students made their First Reconciliation on Saturday, November 23rd. Our school and parish community are very proud of them and continue to keep them in our prayers.

On Wednesday, we had our earthquake drill. Everyone in the school did a great job.

On Thursday. the 1st Grade went to Crestview Nursing Home to sing carols and bring Christmas cheer to the residents.

Thanks to all who participated in the STUCO Toy Drive to benefit theWellston Center. We reached our donation goal at SMA, so we will be enjoying a Christmas Movie/PJ day on December 18th. A permission slip to watch the movie is in your child’s Friday folder. Please return as soon as possible for your child to participate.

Don’t forget we will have Santa’s Workshop on Monday, December 9th. The children will have an opportunity to do their Christmas shopping and wrapping to surprise their loved ones. A list of items, prices and a money envelope are in their Friday folders.

Next Friday, December 13th please join us for Our Lady of Guadeloupe Mass at 8:00 am. Fifth grade will lead the Mass in Spanish. They have been working hard and practicing with Senora Mills. We hope you will join us.

God Bless!

Mrs. Karen Folk

Holy Cross Academy-St. Michael the Archangel Campus

On Mondays during Advent the students will start the day with a prayer service in which we create the living Advent Wreath. Preschool to 4th grade students can wear green tops with uniform bottoms (if you don’t have assigned color just wear uniform), 5th grade will wear either purple or pink depending on Advent weekly candle color, and teachers will wear red.

Next week, Holy Cross Academy K-5 students celebrate Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 9-15) by participating in The Hour of Code with over 800 million other students from over 180 countries around the world.

The Hour Code, organized by code.org, is an one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. It is dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools and increasing participation and interest in computer science. While we work with code.org throughout the school year, next week we will take the time to celebrate coding.

Prevent and Protect STL

The Archdiocese of St. Louis has developed a new system for safe environment compliance called Prevent and Protect STL. Everyone ministering to minors and vulnerable adults (clergy, employees and volunteers) in the Archdiocese are required and asked to register in the new system before December 31, 2020. This includes those new to service and those who are currently in service. For those who have already attended a Protecting God’s Children workshop, your previous training date will transfer to this new system. In addition to attending a live Protecting God’s Children workshop, all clergy, volunteers, and employees will register for an updated background screening, view two new online training modules on abuse reporting and the Code of Ethical Conduct, and agree to the updated Code of Ethical Conduct. Please go to www.preventandprotectstl.org to register. The link for registering is on HCA website.

Sunday NFL Division Final Chili Tailgate & Annual Basketball Free Throw Contest January 19th, 2020

This is a council fundraiser and net proceeds will be split with supporting seminarians at Kenrick Glennon Seminary and

Holy Cross Academy on St. Michael’s campus to help cover some of the “out of pocket costs” teachers spend to provide items for their classrooms.

We will again be hosting our Council indoor NFL Chili Tailgate and NFL Division Finals that will be “Big Screened” and begin at 1 PM available to all parishioners who would like to share a fun afternoon, and diversion for parents who will be supporting their kids who will be playing basketball games that will precede the “Annual Basketball Free Throw” program that will begin after scheduled games around 5 PM.

Families will be charged a flat fee of $ 20.00 that includes chili, sides, and adult beverages with kids eating free. Families meals will include 2 beers for each adult, with additional beers at $ 2.00 and wine for $ 3.00.

Volunteers are needed as follows:

  • 5 volunteers to set up the gym meeting room for NFL game streaming and chili tailgating

  • 3 volunteers needed to supplement tailgating food throughout games

  • 4 volunteers to do scoring for “Basketball Free Throw Contest” that begins after the scheduled basketball games

Based on the last 2 years of hosting this event, based on kids who show up, scoring takes about 45 – 60 minutes, and then sweeping down the gym floor after the contest to have gym ready for school classes on Monday.

Events in February & March

Valentine's Day is Friday, February 14th, and the Council will be hosting a “Marriage Blessing” ceremony after the 5 PM mass on Saturday February 15th. We will send out an RSVP to parishioners to see if there is any interest in and hosting some type of meal for those who wish to be a part of the “Marriage Blessing” celebration that will be performed after the 5 PM mass with their children witnessing the commitment parents are participating in. Once final plans are discussed, we can discuss volunteers needed.

Lenten Fish Fridays

Lent starts early this on Ash Wednesday February 26th and we will be finalizing with Fr. Grosch how many Friday Lenten Fish Dinners will be cooking and serving. As always, the parish will be hosting the dinners and the Council will be co-hosting.
