Mrs. Dolan's Weekly Message-October 18, 2019

Submitted to All Campuses on Friday, October 18, 2019

Dear Holy Cross Families, October 18, 2019

Congratulations to Ms. Maureen Tavernaro as one of this year’s recipients of an Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award! Recipients are selected by the chief administrators of their school districts or educational institutions. This program recognizes educators from Kindergarten to college professors, who are examples of excellence in the field of education in the St. Louis area. The nomination criteria are rigorous and selective, as the archdiocese is only allowed one winner per 500 full-time teachers in the qualifying parish-based and private schools. Ms. Tavernaro is a seventh grade homeroom teacher teaching six, seventh and eighth grade math. She also heads our STREAM committee and teaches twelve various electives with an emphasis on math and science. In addition, she leads our Math Club, Clavius Project, and Chess Club. Please join me in congratulating Ms. Tavernaro.

Wednesday afternoon two teams of 7th and 8th grade students represented Holy Cross Academy in the Vianney Tournament of Champions. The members on Team 1 were Luke Salmo, Sofie Robinson, Isabelle Koenen, Kiara Bolan, and Maggie Powers. Miles Rittenhouse, Maggie Baker, Catherine Buster, Madhavan Anbukumar, and Izzy Miller represented HCA on Team II. The Tournament consisted of three Scholarbowl rounds, one each in English, Math and Science, and History, Social Studies and Geography. The students met at lunch to practice and are looking forward to competing again in the spring at the Bishop DuBourg Scholarbowl.

Congratulations to Ms. Tavernaro and our Math Club for winning two blue ribbons at the Regional Math Meet yesterday. Teams in these math meets are made up of two sixth, two seventh and two eighth grade students. Competing for Holy Cross were Matthew Wingbermuehle, Jo Wozniak, Brie Bradford, Bryce Bradford, Isabelle Koenen, Miles Rittenhouse, Andy Beckett, Sam Jung, Thomas Hopfinger, Bryce Jones and Madhavan Anbukumar. It is rewarding to see so many students saying “Yes” to good opportunities.

You will also find a letter from the Principals regarding standardized testing and a sheet explaining the test scores in the envelope with the test scores. If you have questions regarding the scores, ask your child's teacher at the upcoming parent-teacher conferences or feel free to give me a call.

We are asking our HCA community to come together in support of the 2019 Auction. There are so many ways in which you can help and all of us here at HCA have something special to give. We offer tax-deductible sponsorship opportunities and we are always looking for donated items for our Live and Silent Auctions.
