Mrs. Folk's Weekly Message-October 18, 2019

Submitted to All Campuses on Friday, October 18, 2019

Dear Holy Cross Academy Families,

We have had an exciting week at the SMA campus.

On Monday, the Shrewsbury police participated in a surprise intruder drill. The children did a great job and knew exactly what to do.

I was able to host the Kindergarten and 1st Grade Coffee the Principal on Tuesday. Thanks to the parents who came to meet with me and enjoy a cup of coffee and some bagels.

All of the vision and hearing screenings went smoothly. Thanks to our volunteer Mrs. Seyer for helping keep the students organized.

The STUCO canned food drive started on Monday. Everyone is in the giving spirit of helping others in need. The drive at the SMA campus is helping two great organizations, St. Michael’s St. Vincent de Paul and St. Augustine. Competition for the Golden Can, class with the most donated, has started. I will add to the competition for the class with the most will receive a dress down day and breakfast with the Principal and the second place class will enjoy a dress down day. See below for a list of items the food pantry needs.

The Standardized Test Scores have been sent home in the oldest and only’s Friday folder today in a sealed envelope to the parents of 1st through 5th Grade students. Please make sure you review the results before Parent/Teacher Conferences so the teacher, learning consultant, or myself can answer any of your questions.

Next Wednesday, we will honor Mary, our Blessed Mother with the 5th and 2nd Grade leading the campus in a Living Rosary starting at 2:00 pm, hopefully weather permitting by the flagpole.

I look forward to seeing the 2nd and 3rd Grade parents next Tuesday at 7:45am in the Teacher’s Lounge for Coffee with the Principal.

Lastly, the weather is cooler and many children are not bringing labeled jackets, sweatshirt, or sweater. They are complaining they are cold during morning recess.

Enjoy your weekend!!!

I feel blessed to be part of this community.

God Bless!

Mrs. Karen Folk

Volunteer Sign up for Book Fair for beginning November 3rd

Our school’s annual book fair is almost here! Last week Scholastic Book Fair flyers went home with students. It was just a preview of new items; there will be much more available at the fair. I could use some help setting up and running the book fair. Please see the sign up genius to take a shift if you can. The times listed are suggested - please don’t worry if you can’t make it the entire time, or feel free to stay longer! Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

Uniform Reminders

Our uniform is a visual reminder for our students of our Catholic identity in our school. It is important that our uniform rules are followed respectfully. For the most part, this is going smoothly, but I would like to ask you to pay attention to a few details. We will start winter uniform on November 1st.

  • Now that it is getting cooler, make sure your student has a uniform sweatshirt to wear to school. The options available are the HCA logo sweatshirts or fleece or a navy cardigan sweater. Non-uniform sweatshirts may be worn for recess.

  • Socks should be white, navy, or black only. Logos on socks are acceptable, but prominent stripes and socks of other colors are not allowed.

  • The only jewelry permitted are religious medals, watches/fitbits, and post earrings which do not fall below the earlobe.

Trunk or Treat

Don’t Forget the HCA Trunk or Treat is October 26th from 6:00-8:00 pm on the JP2 parking lot. Please join my family at the event. We are running a mini carnival.

Please register at the following website:

Remember the weather is getting colder and winter uniforms will start on November 1st which includes Gym Uniforms. Here are some places/websites you can pick up shorts and sweatpants for the upcoming winter uniform which is less than a month away.

The Bookfair will run from November 3rd - 7th. The students will have a chance to purchase during lunch on November 5th and 6th. Parents can purchase during Conferences on November 7th and online. The teachers will have a book “wish list” for their classrooms for parents to purchase. Please support your child’s teachers. More information will be sent soon. All proceeds go to the SMA Library. Thanks for your help!!!!

Throughout the school year, parents are invited to a “Coffee with the Principal.” This is a time for parents to come enjoy coffee and bagels and to talk about any questions, concerns, or just to check in. Parents may attend the Coffee with the Principal when their child’s grade is assigned in the Teacher’s Lounge at 7:45 am. I hope you can join us.

On Saturday, November 16, 2019, we will celebrate the Holy Cross Academy Legacy Gala and Auction. Proceeds are used to invest in the future of Holy Cross Academy by enhancing the learning environment and giving our students the best resources available in the ever-changing world of modern education. We are asking our HCA community to come together in support of the 2019 Auction. There are so many ways in which you can help and all of us here at HCA have something special to give. We offer tax-deductible sponsorship opportunities and we are always looking for donated items for our Live and Silent Auctions. Please feel free to email legacygala@hca-stl.org or call Chasley Bradbury-Flores at 314.249.1307 with any questions.
