Mrs. Dolan's Weekly Message-March 8, 2019

Submitted to All Campuses on Friday, March 08, 2019

Dear Holy Cross Academy Families, March 8, 2019

Monday our eighth grade students participated in a Regional Mass at Assumption Parish with Archbishop Carlson and students from the nine other schools in our region. In addition to celebrating Mass, the students were divided into 40 different groups to prepare personal care bags and have lunch. Thank you to all who donated deodorant for the Region 5 Homeless Project. Holy Cross Academy had a large and impressive presence. It was fun to see the students interacting with friends from other schools and meeting new ones.

This week the entire student body attended a special showing of Apollo 11at Ronnie’s Theater. This NASA documentary is being shown for one week only to limited audiences around the United States. Our middle school students were fortunate to be one of those audiences. The program highlighted the July 20, 1969 landing of a “lunar module” on the surface of the earth and Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon. The film also included the actual build-up and lift-off with scenes of the culture of the time. With the entire nation watching and celebrating the launch it felt reminiscent of the Total Solar Eclipse of 2018. In conjunction with the film, the students participated in an all school STREAM project measuring the Moon Phrases of 2019.

Following the STREAM morning, the students celebrated Mardi Gras with lots of snacks and a Futsal Tournament. Winners of the this year’s tournament were: 8th grade-Team Yellow, 7th grade The Carriers, and 6th grade Devils.

We began our Lenten “Journey With Jesus” on Ash Wednesday. During Lent, all students will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and attend weekly Stations of the Cross. The HCA service project during Lent will be the STUCO sponsored Change for Change campaign. The middle school students will be engaged in a Penny War following Spring Break. The goal of a Penny War is to have the highest total of positive money by Holy Week. Students collect pennies in a jar as a homeroom for positive money. Other students may put silver or paper money in the jar which becomes negative. Monies collected will be donated to the children of Melissa's Hope Orphanage in Haiti and to help support the missionary work of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Congratulations to three eighth students, Aiden D., Zach J., and Sophia F. or being inducted Tuesday Night into the Academy of Advanced Studies at Bishop DuBourg High School. Sophia was also will receive the Presidential Award.

Lunch: April and May lunches are available for pre ordering. You may order April lunches until midnight on March 22nd and May lunches until midnight on April 18th. Since the end of year is approaching please send in your lunch balance owed to the school office.
