Ms. Abkemeier's Weekly Message-March 8, 2019

Submitted to All Campuses on Friday, March 08, 2019

Dear Holy Cross Academy Parents,

During the season of Lent, we as a school, strive to give our students opportunities for reflection and prayer. Students attended Mass on Ash Wednesday to receive ashes. Students learned during the homily that the season of Lent is a time of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. In their classrooms, each student wrote their Lenten promise on a fish and decorated it. These fish will be hanging in our school hallways as a reminder to the students, faculty, and all who enter, that our school community is working hard this Lenten season to be more like Jesus.

Also during Lent, we will also be offering the Stations of the Cross on Friday afternoons at 2:15. Please see the important dates below for more information. Our second, third, fourth, and fifth graders will have an opportunity to attend reconciliation during Lent. The HCA service project during Lent will be the STUCO sponsored Change for Change campaign. Students are encouraged to collect change throughout the Lenten season. Monies collected will be donated to the children of Melissa's Hope Orphanage in Haiti and to help support the missionary work of the Sisters of Notre Dame. White paper bags to collect the donated change are coming home with your child today. Please return the bags to the school office on April 12th.

Don’t forget to stop by the JP2 parish fish fry every Friday during Lent from 4:30 - 8:00 PM in the school campus cafeteria.

Our 2019 Scholastic Book Fair will be open after school April 23rd-25th and during Grandparents' Day on 4/25. Students will be bringing home more information in April. All fair proceeds go to purchasing books for both classrooms and the HCA/JP2 library. Please consider volunteering for this great event that benefits HCA. Sign-up information will be shared soon.

The JP2 campus will be celebrating READ ACROSS AMERICA by having a book drive. Please consider donating any gently used or new books to our drive. We are collecting books for all ages. The drive begins March 4th and ends March 25th.

April and May lunches are available for pre ordering. You may order April lunches until midnight on March 22nd and May lunches until midnight on April 18th. Since the end of year is approaching please send in your lunch balance owed to the school office.

St. Louis Read, Right, & Run Marathon is fully integrated marathon program for children in grades K-8 that focuses on literacy, fitness, and character development. Students are challenged to READ 26 books, RIGHT the community with 26 good deeds and learn to set goals to RUN the necessary miles in preparation for the final race. The final race will be in Forest Park the morning of April 6, 2019. The goal for the K-5 grade level is to train and complete either a 1.2 or 2 mile race. Parent volunteers will coordinate practices on the following dates for students in the JP2 school parking lot from 3:00 - 3:45 PM.
