Mrs. Dolan's Weekly Message-March 1, 2019

Submitted to All Campuses on Friday, March 01, 2019

Dear Holy Cross Academy Families, March 1, 2019

The students were very happy this morning having sleep in on our SNOW DAY yesterday.

We have had a very busy week for the middle school starting last Saturday. Our 8th grade students attended their Confirmation Retreat at Seven Holy Founders. The retreat was hosted by the Archdiocesan REAP team. The Retreat is a good opportunity for the students and their sponsors to spend some quality time together preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Ms. Kern is helping prepare the students through religion class. Thank you to Mr. Ewing and Ann Kelly, PSR Director for Annunciation Parish, for helping on Saturday.

Also on Saturday 18 students represented HCA at the SLUH Robotics Jamboree. Over 400 students participated in the Jamboree and the results will be shared during a banquet scheduled for Sunday, April 14th. The students worked hard and they were confident with their performance. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the SLUH Clavius Project which over the last four years has donated twelve Lego EV3 Robotics Kits and a 3-D printer. Our coding elective class has been designing and printing projects in class with the 3-D printer. Next year we are in line for ten PC tablets to be used with the robots. We have been gifted with these excellent pieces of equipment because of HCA’s performances at the Jamborees. Former teacher, Travis Tompson, started our program and Maureen Tavernaro has taken over with help from Ms. Ferrara. Ms. Tavernaro is also serving on the Clavius Project’s curriculum committee and hoping to take our robotics program to the second level.

Monday night Tony Tramelli from West County Associates shared some insight into the middle school years. He explained one area of concern is research showing with the influx of social media, students today are supposed to be the “most connected” and yet they feel isolated and lonely at the same time. Children of this age crave intimacy with good friends, yet because social media is today’s socialization, they are not experiencing voice inflection, looking friends in the eye while speaking, and talking back and forth in rhythm. This can lead to adolescents becoming incapable of dealing with their and other’s emotions.

Wednesday, twenty 7th, and 8th grade students from HCA participated in an Equations competition. Two hundred and fifteen students competed as part of the Gifted Resource Council’s Academic Challenge Cup on the UMSL campus. The students start learning Equations in a first semester elective and then continue to get together and practice until the competition. Many area teams start learning Equations in elementary school. Parents Mrs. Melissa Catalano and Mrs. Denise Mills started and taught our Equations elective five years ago and Mrs. Catalano and Mrs. Tavernaro have continued the program.

We are hoping to start a Linguistics elective next fall. In Linguistics students learn about many aspects of the human knowledge and behavior. It includes sounds (phonetics, phonology), words (morphology), sentences (syntax), and meaning (semantics).

We are always looking for parents to share their unique talents with us. If you are interested in teaming with a teacher for any elective, please let me know. Your team teacher will attend the classes and help with classroom management and assessment.
